This article examines changes in British English, and in particular the problem of elite English in modern British society, the processes taking place today in it and their impact on the normative British pronunciation-RP (received pronunciation) as "the language of the elite".

Currently, close attention is paid to the problem of interaction between the American and British variants of the English language. The article examines the history, stages and reasons for the emergence of the American English language. The concept of "Americanism" is considered and examples of Americanisms are given. The obviousness of the main differences between British English and American English are revealed.
