The paper presents the problem of psychological characteristics of generations depending on the cultural context and gives the American, Chinese, Indian and Russian generation models. The transfer of generation conceptualization is impossible without historical and cultural conditions of their development and formation. Empirically determined features of modern generations of Southern Russia show the differences between generations and within one generation.

The article examines cultural differences in the perception and interpretation of significant trends and performers of popular music in the USSR, post-Soviet Russia and the USA, as well as similarities and differences due to the cultural context and social norms. From teaching experience and participation in Russian-American exchange programs.

The article discusses the main points concerning intercultural dialogue, using the example of "light talk" (or small talk), as well as common problems arising due to different understanding and perception of such a phenomenon.
