Paper is devoted to the history of gymnasium education in pre-revolutionary Russia before the first half of the 19th century

The article is devoted to the history of gymnasium education in pre-revolutionary Russia during the period of the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Paper is devoted to the history of gymnasium education in pre-revolutionary Russia in the Oryol province. Till 1874 the Oryol province belonged to the Kharkov educational district and down to 1871 in province the unique classical gymnasium - in Orel function. The author analyzes preconditions and factors educations promoting development in province till 1874.

In first gymnasia, which had appeared in Ancient Greece, gymnastics was the basic subject. Later the leading part of gymnastics has been lost. The paper is devoted to the question of teaching the gymnastics in Russian pre-revolutionary gymnasia and to changes of the role of this subject in an educational rate of Russian gymnasium during the evolution of this educational establishment.

The article is devoted to the problem of development and formation of pedagogical education in the Rus-sian province. The author describes the activity of the educational institutions which were carrying out teach-ers’ training in Russia and the trans Ural region in the second half of the XIXth – the beginning of the XXth centuries.
