The current situation of the state economy is next to impossible to assess without taking into account the smallest part of it – the family. The structure of household consumption is differentiated by the state control, and the main social and demographic characteristics. The author presents the analysis of the family consumption patterns in 2015-2016 and their impact on the welfare of the economy. The main trends of the further development in this sphere are outlined.

The article reveals the basic concepts of population living standard and their incomes. The authors give statistical analysis and assessment of the population income level over a long period. They study the influence of major real incomes on the quality of living standard, identify groups of factors that determine the formation of households’ income.

The authors note the indicators characteristic to the structure of the population with incomes below subsistence minimum. They present statistical analysis and estimate the level of population incomes during the long-term period of the study, as well as the level of real wages taking into account the inflation level and the US dollar rate.

The article is based on the study of the standard of living of the population in the Smolensk region. Special attention is paid to the main activities aimed at improving the standard of living. Conclusions are made based on the analysis of indicators that characterize the standard of living of the region's population.
