In the modern world, due attention is not always paid to the process of studying intercultural communication, especially when the language is not taught in the humanities. The article provides examples of how, without knowing the basics of intercultural communication, one can involuntarily offend the interlocutor or get into an unpleasant position, without understanding what the partner wants to tell you. In addition, the author brings up an issue of language and culture interaction. This scientific article uses examples of both an English / American resident and a representative of Chinese culture way of thinking.

For effective and successful intercultural communication, overcoming the language barrier, it is necessary to use the linguistic and cultural aspect. The effectiveness of using linguistic material by virtue of linguistic and cultural studies is considered in the article. The article focuses on the problems of teaching 1st year students of linguistics to work with cultural and language realia at an oral practice or home reading class. The author considers the possibilities of developing students’ reading skills by introducing a series of tasks and assignments aimed at finding, analyzing and commenting linguistic and cultural data they come across in a text or a work of fiction. Such an approach to organizing a class not only ensures broadening of students’ outlook and cultural knowledge acquisition, but also gives them a better insight into the author’s message when studying works of fiction teaching them to consider every situation within a framework of the historical and cultural context. Tasks provided by the teacher serve as a general guideline for students to follow when searching and analyzing the information both in the the given context and outside it.
