This article focuses on the role of corpus linguistics and its methods for the modern science. Some information about the main Russian and English corpora is provided.

This article describes the meaning and relevance of personal and collective speech in the formation of linguistic knowledge. The naturalness of speech relating to an individual or repre-sentatives of a dialect, its representative nature, as well as the fact that it embodies the majority of linguistic and cultural features are substantiated. It is shown that it is possible to confirm the general and particular laws of linguistic knowledge by studying specific speech situations with the same aspects.
