The row of difficulties arising up for students in the process of mastering and use of methods of mathematical statistics is considered in the article. The paradoxical situation is designated and analyzed: contrary to expectations, problems of development and application of statistical methods have not so "mathematical" character. Recommendations about increase of efficiency of assimilation by students of the corresponding training material are formulated.

In article need of reforming of system of the higher education which has to be aimed at education of competitive graduates who can independently coordinate the professional activity is designated. The author specifies that it is impossible without formation of research competence of students during their training in higher education institution. One of the main objectives of the higher school at today's stage of its development is not simply to present to students ready knowledge and decisions, and formation at students of higher education institution of research competence which will create at them ability independently to get information, to be able to process it and to look for non-standard decisions. In this regard actual is a problem of the organization of research work of students.
