The article is devoted to the translation of poems and songs as components of R. Dahl's prose tales. The study has shown that, when translating them, black humor and everyday realities represent a difficulty for the translator. Black humor turns out to be the main factor in the transformation of the text in modern translations – either omitting significant passages of the text, or softening them to simple humor.
The article analyses the way a poetic translator deals with imagery, with a view to outline the possible methods of its transfer into the target language, taking into account the restrictions imposed by poetic rhyme and rhythm. It is sought to elicit non-essential elements of a literary image, which can be sacrificed, should the translator face the impossibility to transmit the integral image, the key elements being preserved and reproduced in the target language.
