The current situation in the world is characterized by a revival of the interest in the folk culture among various nationalities. One of the most popular is the musical culture of Ireland. In the course of the work, the following research methods were used: the study of the literature, the generalization of the material, the comparison, the systematization and the analysis of the results obtained.
The article analyses the results of the linguocultural survey held in 2023 at the Institute of Foreign Languages and looks at ways which contribute to improving socio-cultural competence through teaching English.

The study of intercultural communication in psychology is an important issue in the context of the modern globalized world. Research in this area can lead to the development of more effective methods of training and education, improving the quality of international cooperation based on an understanding of psychological characteristics. The purpose of our research is to study intercultural communication from the point of view of the difficulties that arise in its process. The author's questionnaire was used for the study. The study sample consisted of two groups of students from the Petrozavodsk State University: 1 – a group in which there are foreign students (25 people), 2 – a group in which there are no foreign students (14 people). The results showed that the assessment of difficulties in intercultural communication by students who had experience of intercultural communication differed from the assessment of difficulties in intercultural communication by students who did not have such experience.
This article reveals the essence of the concept of “compensatory competence” through the prism of its component structure, as well as through the actions of mechanisms of choosing a particular strategy in the process of communication in terms of lack of language knowledge. The article is supported by the results of the questionnaire survey conducted to familiarize the respondents with the notion of “compensatory competence” and the actions of its mechanisms.
The article considers the ways of interpreting the image of a cat in the world cultures. Examples are given of traditions and superstitions connected with the image of a cat. English and Russian idioms including the word “cat”, expressing the attitude of people to these animals are analyzed. The results of the survey, conducted among the students of the Russian university concerning the meaning and interpretation of the differences in the worldview of representatives of different cultures, are described.
