one of the tasks of modern education is the formation of a personality capable of finding solutions in the modern world with its challenges to «uncertainty, complexity and diversity of a changing world, without losing the human in man”» (A.G. Asmolov). The attention of universities should be directed not only to the formation of practical professional skills, but also to the formation of so-called «soft skills», i.e. human competencies that allow him to effectively adapt to changes and interact with people in the process of his professional activities.
Significant «soft skills» are communicative competences, such as the ability to speak in public, the ability to listen to the interlocutor, the ability to negotiate, the ability to adequately express one's intentions in speech. Speech disciplines such as «Culture of Speech», «Rhetoric», etc., are aimed at their formation, which makes them increasingly important in modern university education.
The article analyzes the results of an empirical study of the characteristics of the motivation for studying at a university for students of different profiles. The results obtained by the author indicate that the actual educational motives (cognition, mastery of the profession) do not always come to the fore, which can complicate the educational and professional activities of students and their subsequent entry into labor activity.
