The author deals with some aspects and peculiarities of the competence approach and ways of formation of cultural competence of students of international relations department. The author defines the most effective methods and ways in teaching foreign languages from the perspective of the competence approach.

The author examines the implementation of competence-based approach in teaching foreign languages to students of nonlinguistic humanitarian specialties. The author presents the generalized experience of the chair of foreign languages to form students’ competence according to the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standards of Russian Federation.

The article aims at providing language learners with the appropriate level of communicative and professional competence through efficient strategies of using authentic teaching aids. The article defines the most effective methods and techniques of teaching students a foreign language from the position of a competence approach.

The competence, axiological, system-activity approaches become essential in the organization of joint activities of the tutor and trainee in the system of professional development. The author describes the organizational and methodological conditions of the internship within these approaches; provides the set of principles of construction and development of the educational environment of the internship in the system of additional vocational training.
